The Spirit of America

Today is September 11, 2011.
There are many memorials today reflecting on what happened 10 years ago. Those old enough to experience that day surely remember where we were when we heard the news and the feelings that went along with it.

Today I want to reflect on what happened on that day and after. What I remember most is the courage and caring of people - the bravery, the hope, and the kindness.

There were numerous stories of bravery, hope, and kindness shown by those who helped others who were scared, injured, or trapped. They demonstrated the courage to step forward, the hope that there would be people to save, the kindness towards others not to suffer or feel alone.

There were stories of some who died saving others, and some who live to share their first-hand knowledge of that historical experience. And, of course the story of the enormous risk taken by those passengers on Flight 93 who were willing to sacrifice their lives to save countless others.

After that day, people seemed more willing to reach out to each other because we felt we were one as a nation, a true United States of America.

This is the American Spirit. This is what our ancestors who came to this country brought with them. And this spirit still lives in each of us. It is the freedom they came for and that we still possess. This freedom is born from the courage to risk personal freedom for the hope of a better life for all. It is the kindness and caring about and for one another, even when it may not be convenient for us individually.

This is what makes America great. This is the American Spirit. I have it, and you have it.

On this day and in the days to come remember that this spirit lives in you as an American. Consider what you can do to live this spirit of bravery, hope, and kindness in your life.

Be brave, be hopeful, be kind, and believe in the Spirit of America.
